The elements of the logo, reflect Samoa’s close relationship to the environment.
The wave, a reminder that Samoa lies in the Pacific Ocean, is a stylized nifo oti weapon. The intense training to develop skill in using this traditional weapon, mirrors that needed to excel in competitive sport.
The soaring gogosina bird, reaching for the stars of the Southern Cross, is the athlete striving in their quest for sporting excellence.
The logo was designed and used at the 2002 Commonwealth Games held in Manchester. It was registered in England that same year.
The designer was Graphic Designer, Australian Ben Plain, a lecturer at the National University of Samoa.
